Molly Magai - BiographyMolly Magai was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. There she learned to appreciate the unnatural beauty of industrial landscapes on family trips to visit the drawbridges in the Cuyahoga river “flats”, a downtown area full of decaying heavy industry, with abandoned rusting factories and mountains of coal.A prolific artist throughout childhood, she discovered painting in college and has stayed with it for more than 25 years. She received a BA in painting and drawing from Bennington College in 1985. After a 5 year stint in New York City she returned to Vermont, then moved to Seattle in 1992. She participated in a number of shows in Seattle and elsewhere in the mid-90’s, including solo shows at AG47 Gallery and the Speakeasy Café. Recently, she has exhibited at Gallery 110, Zeitgeist Coffee, and Ouch My Eye Gallery, among other venues. She was a participant in the 2008 Edge Professional Development program sponsored by Artist Trust. Over the years she has worked to develop the craft of painting and the art of simultaneously expressing emotion and describing what she sees. In her recent paintings of roads, vehicles, bridges, and overpasses, she hopes to express the beauty, menace, and joy in a landscape created by people for cars. |
