Sarah Dillon: Statement of Practice

I seek subject matter that is seemingly unimportant and make it important by drawing out the meaning and charm from the ordinary and unnoticed. My work allows me to be naked and uncompromised through the physical act of creation as well as through my chosen subject matter.

I like that expressive mark making threatens to break the subject into abstraction, and similarly, a resistant woodblock splinters into some expressive mark when cut.  This feeling or act of physical expression inherently holds true to the idea of nature having a pulse. The work takes on a sense of “theater in the round” or the notion of looking through a window watching events as they tell obscure stories hinting at lyrics of folk songs, poetry, politics or personal experience and contemplation about the world. Embracing naivety is the first step towards discovering truth through the human experience.  There is where I find humor, faith, mystery, and discover stories waiting to be told.  I want for my work to inspire and encourage the viewer to discover for themselves the little pieces of their day that make life worth living.
